Mediation in English

Mediation is an alternative way of resolving conflict and the major principles are confidentiality, neutrality and voluntariness. I would like to illustrate this with a short story.

A man in the Middle East left seventeen camels to his three sons. To the first son he left half the camels; to the second son, a third of the camels; and to de youngest son, a ninth of the camels. Well, then the negotiation started! Seventeen doesn’t divide by two, it doesn’t divide by three and it also doesn’t divide by nine. Brotherly tempers soon began to fray. Finally, in desperation, they consulted a wise old woman. The wise old woman thought about their problem for a long time. Finally, she came back and said, “Well, I don’t know if I can help you, but if you wish, you can have my camel”. So then they had eighteen camels. The first son took his share – half of eighteen is nine; the second son took his – a third of eighteen is six and the youngest took his – a ninth of eighteen is two. A total of seventeen camels! There was one camel left over which they gave back to the wise old woman . (William Ury)

As a certified IMI (International Mediation Institute) mediator, I help participants who are in the mediation process to find their eighteenth camel. In many cases, they are in need of that extra perspective to find a solution for their conflict.

My specialism is work and business-related conflicts.
